Coal Burner Sweeping

NACS registered chimney sweeping for coal fires and coal-burning stoves across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. Free smoke draw test, certificate issued on the day. From £75.

Coal needs sweeping more often than most people think

Bituminous coal is the heaviest-sooting fuel in common use. It builds a thick, dense deposit quickly, and a flue burning it needs sweeping twice a year — not annually.

Smokeless fuels are cleaner, but there is a persistent and expensive misconception that they do not need sweeping at all. They do, at least once a year. Smokeless deposits are finer but they still accumulate, and a flue nobody has looked at in five years is a flue nobody knows the condition of.

Old coal flues brought back into use

A great deal of housing across Greater Manchester was built for coal and then left unused for decades once gas central heating arrived. Those flues are now being brought back into service, and they are the ones most likely to throw up something unexpected — old soot falls, failing parging, nests, or a flue that turns out to be shared with next door.

Sweep and draw test before first lighting. And do not burn coal or smokeless fuel in an appliance designed only for wood — it produces very little heat and a great deal of soot, because the stove was never built for it.

What we do

No mess, and a certificate your insurer accepts

Sheets down before we start and a HEPA filtered industrial vacuum running throughout. Every job includes a free smoke draw test and a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping — which matters, because most insurers will no longer pay out on chimney fire damage without one.

How often?

Twice a year on bituminous coal. At least once a year on smokeless fuels — and yes, they genuinely do need it, whatever you may have been told.

Burning coal in an open fire and in a stove are different jobs. The stove runs more efficiently, so its flue runs cooler and deposits form sooner.

No. A wood-only stove is not designed for it — you will get very little heat and a great deal of soot. Check your appliance before you buy fuel for it.

From £75, including the free smoke draw test and the certificate. If the chimney has not been swept in a long time, tell us when you book so we can allow the time.
