A multi fuel stove is a sealed, efficient appliance — which is exactly why its flue needs more attention than people expect. Efficiency means more of the heat goes into the room and less up the chimney, so the flue runs cooler than an open fire’s. Cooler flue gases condense sooner, and deposits build faster.
What builds up depends on what you burn. Smokeless fuels leave a fine, dense deposit. Wood leaves tar if the logs are not properly seasoned. Burn both alternately, as most multi fuel owners do, and you get a mix of the two — which is why we would rather know what is actually going in the stove before we start.
By some distance it is a stove fitted into an unlined chimney built for an open fire. The flue is far too wide for the appliance, so gas speed drops, the flue never gets properly warm, and it soots up much faster than the installer suggested it would.
If your stove has needed sweeping more often than you were told, that is usually why — and it is worth knowing before it becomes a tar problem.
