Sweeping chimneys in Irlam
Irlam and Cadishead grew around the Ship Canal and the steelworks, and most of the housing went up to serve them — interwar and post-war semis and terraces, built at pace and to a handful of repeated designs.
That makes the chimneys unusually consistent. Single flues to the front room, often a second serving a back room, and party-wall stacks shared with next door. After enough of them you know roughly what you will find before the sheets go down.
What varies is what has been done since. A great many of these fireplaces were closed off during the central heating years and have been opened back up in the last twenty years, or had a log burner fitted into the old opening. A flue that has spent decades behind a panel is a different job to one in continuous use.
