Sweeping chimneys in Marple
Marple sits where Greater Manchester runs out and the Peak District starts, and the chimneys reflect that. Stone-built cottages and mill housing along the canal and through Marple Bridge and Compstall, Victorian and Edwardian property on the roads out of the centre, and post-war estate housing filling the gaps between.
What sets it apart from the suburbs closer in is how hard the appliances work. Out here a woodburner is often genuine heating rather than an evening luxury, and some properties are running it as their main source of warmth from October through to April. Those flues need sweeping twice a season, not once a year.
The other difference is the weather. Stacks on the higher ground towards Mellor and Strines take considerably more punishment than anything in south Manchester, and it shows in the pots and the flaunching.
