Sweeping chimneys in Failsworth
Failsworth is terraced-and-semi country, built for coal and built at scale. The streets running off the Oldham Road went up when every room had a fire and the chimneys were swept as routine, several times a year, by somebody doing exactly what we do now.
Then gas central heating arrived, and a great many of those flues were capped, boarded over or simply abandoned. Thirty or forty years later they are being brought back — a reopened fireplace, a log burner put into the old opening — and that is the job we get called to most here.
It is also the job most likely to turn up something unexpected. Old soot falls, failed parging, a nest nobody knew about, or a flue that turns out to be shared or crossed with the house next door.
