Sweeping chimneys in Prestwich
Prestwich has a better class of chimney than most of north Manchester. The roads around the village and out towards Heaton Park carry substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses, built when every room had a fireplace and the stacks were made to show off. Four or five flues to a chimney is normal, and most of them have never been lined.
Sedgley Park and the streets off Bury Old Road bring large interwar semis and detached property, while the estates further out are simpler post-war housing with single flues.
In houses of the Victorian sort there are almost always fireplaces in rooms nobody lights any more. Those flues still need checking — an unused chimney is exactly where nests, loose debris and damp problems sit unnoticed, and in a shared stack a problem on one flue can affect the one next to it.
