Sweeping chimneys in Middleton
Middleton has some genuinely interesting housing for a town its size. Alongside the Victorian terraces and the mill-era streets there is a cluster of Arts and Crafts property by Edgar Wood, the architect who worked extensively here around the turn of the last century. Chimneys on houses like those are part of the design rather than an afterthought, and they want treating carefully.
Around them sit the interwar semis of Alkrington and Rhodes, and the large post-war estate housing at Langley — simpler single flues, but a great many of them blocked off during the central heating years and since reopened.
That reopening is the most common job we get called to here, and it is the one most likely to turn up something unexpected: old soot falls, failing parging, or a flue that turns out to be shared with next door.
